The best way of treating a dental or oral health ailment is to prevent it before it happens. Children and young adults are particularly susceptible to dental and oral health problems because their teeth are just starting to come in, or are being replaced by their permanent teeth. Food and bacteria tend to get caught up in the deep pits and fissures between teeth and the gums, and can lead to eventual cavities.
Regular brushing and flossing can help prevent cavities from forming in the child’s teeth, but often times there are areas that even a toothbrush can’t reach, allowing cavities to form. Dental sealants can fill in the deep pits and keep the tooth surface cavity free—and best of all; they can be placed without drilling or shots!
What are sealants?
Dental sealants are thin coatings of tooth-colored plastic that gets placed on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, preventing the formation of costly cavities. They are typically placed on the back teeth, such as premolars and molars, because they are the most difficult for children to reach with their toothbrush. This extra protection for your child’s teeth is an easy, cost-effective way to help prevent cavities, when combined with regular visits to our dental hygienists and examinations by Dr. Henslee and Dr. Hafen.
